  51.  
  52. The ST21 and ST22 are 16-bit ST412 interface controllers designed
  53. for use in AT-type systems.
  54.  
  55. *       The ST21M and ST22M are designed for use with drives
  56. employing MFM data encoding and a 5.0 Mbit/sec. I/O data transfer
  57. rate. Seagate Technology, Inc. assumes no liability for
  58. installation of an MFM controller with an RLL-certified drive.
  59.  
  60. *       The ST21R and ST22R are designed for drives using RLL
  61. (2,7) data encoding and a 7.5 Mbit/sec. I/O data transfer rate.
  62. Seagate RLL drives are easily recognized by an R after the model
  63. number, e.g., ST157R. Seagate Technology, Inc. assumes no
  64. liability for installation of an RLL controller with an
  65. MFM-certified drive.
  66.  
  67. *       The ST22M and ST22R have an onboard floppy diskette
  68. controller which supports two diskette drives in the following
  69. formats:
  70.         - 3.5-inch, 720K Byte/1.44M Byte
  71.         - 5.25-inch, 360K Byte/1.2 M Byte
  72.  
  73. *       The ST21 and ST22 have a unique recording format and
  74. therefore require all attached drives to be installed by one of
  75. the processes described in this guide before operation.
  76.  
  77. This publication may be used with SEAGATE Paired Program drives
  78. or as a controller-only installation guide.
  79.  
  80. Paired program drives are shipped with a Seagate controller. They
  81. are recognized by a PR label on the drive top cover. Paired
  82. drives are shipped formatted with a small DOS partition
  83. containing the installation program, INSTALLR, which will
  84. low-level format and partition your drive. You must supply the
  85. DOS program. The ST21/ST22 can recognize whether a drive has a
  86. Paired Program software loaded, or has been previously installed.

  90. Paired Program drives with formatted capacities greater than 32
  91. MBytes have DISK MANAGER (customized by ONTRACK for Seagate)
  92. partitioning software loaded. Instructions on installing Paired
  93. Program drives begin in Section 3.0.

  97. Before You Begin...
  98.  
  99. Inspect the controller, drive, cables, mounting
  100. hardware/accessories, documentation and packaging. If any item is
  101. incorrect, missing or appears damaged, contact your Distributor
  102. or Dealer immediately.
  103.  
  104. Handling: Improper handling during transit/shipping accounts for
  105. many "installation" problems. Prior to installation, handle your
  106. drive/controller carefully.
  107.  
  108. Observe Static-Discharge Precautions: Keep the drive/controller in
  109. their static-shielded bags until you are ready to complete the
  110. installation. Use a grounded wrist-strap at your workstation; if
  111. unavailable, ground yourself frequently by touching the metal
  112. chasis of the system before handling any components. Avoid
  113. static-inducing carpeted areas.
  114.  
  115. Shipping: When transporting or shipping a drive or controller, a
  116. Seagate-approved container must be used. Keep your original box.
  117. They are easily identified by a red label identifying them as a
  118. Seagate Approved Package.
  119.  
  120. Shipping the drive in a non-approved container will void the drive
  121. warranty.
  122.  
  123. Repair centers may refuse receipt of components improperly
  124. packaged or obviously damaged in transit. Contact your
  125. Distributor to purchase additional boxes. Seagate recommends
  126. shipping by an air-ride carrier experienced in handling computer
  127. equipment.
  128.  
  129. Maintenance: Seagate disc drives do not require any preventative
  130. maintenance. The head/disc assembly is sealed and does not
  131. contain any user-servicable components. Tampering with the
  132. factory-seal will void the warranty.

  137. 1.0  ST21, ST22 Setup and Installation
  138.  
  139. Caution: Do not handle a drive/controller without observing
  140. static-discharge precautions. A grounded wrist-strap is
  141. preferred; if unavailable, ground yourself frequently by
  142. touching the metal chasis of the system before handling any
  143. components. Do not unpack the drive/controller until you are
  144. ready to complete the installation.
  145.  
  146. During the formatting process, you will be asked to enter some
  147. simple drive specifications. Refer to Figures 1-2 for basic
  148. specifications. For non-Seagate drives, refer to the
  149. manufacturer's instructions.
  150.  
  151. Important Note: A Drive Type must be set in the AT system CMOS if
  152. the controller BIOS is disabled.  See Section 2.6.

  200. Read/Write Head Parking: A PARK program is preloaded on all
  201. Paired Program drives, PARK.EXE or PARK.COM, which the INSTALLR
  202. software will copy to a diskette during installation. The
  203. following drives require parking before the drive/system is
  204. transported: ST124, ST225, ST225R, ST238R, ST250R. Refer to
  205. Section 2.7.
  206.  
  207. If your drive is not Paired, see your Distributor/Dealer for a
  208. read/write head parking program.

  212. 1.1  Controller Setup
  213.  
  214. 1.1.1  Set Controller BIOS and Drive Address: JP1-JP2
  215.  
  216. Controllers and add-in boards are installed in the bus slots on
  217. the computer's motherboard. These slots are recognized by the
  218. computer BIOS address number. Each board installed must be
  219. jumpered for a specific address.
  220.  
  221. C8000h-CBFFFh is the default BIOS address for the ST21/ST22. If
  222. this address is already occupied by another board, use the
  223. jumpers provided to change the Seagate controller to another
  224. address.  Refer to Figures 4-5.
  225.  
  226. When installing the ST21/ST22 in a system already containing a
  227. hard disc controller, The Seagate controller must be jumpered at
  228. a higher BIOS address than the resident controller. See Figures
  229. 4-5.

  254. 1.1.2  Floppy Diskette Enable/Disable: JP4 (ST22 Only)

  256. The ST22 features an onboard floppy diskette controller. It is
  257. shipped with the controller enabled, to disable remove the jumper
  258. at JP4.
  259.  
  260. Note: Most systems will not support the secondary floppy diskette
  261. I/O addresses.
  262.  
  263. 1.1.3  BIOS Enable/Disable Jumper: JP3

  265. The ST21 and ST22 are shipped with the BIOS enabled, JP3 open. To
  266. disable the BIOS, attach jumper at JP3.  Refer to Figures 4-5.

  268. 1.1.4  Remote LED Connector: J6
  269.  
  270. The ST21 and ST22 provide for connection to the drive activity
  271. LED found on most AT-type systems. Connect the remote LED cable to
  272. J6.

  327. 1.3  Controller Installation

  329. CAUTION: VERIFY THAT THE POWER IS OFF.
  330.  
  331. 1. Remove the System Cover (Refer to your computer system
  332. manual).
  333.  
  334. Access to the screws is usually at the back of the system. Save
  335. the screws. Systems vary, but most require you to slide the cover
  336. forward for removal.
  337.  
  338. 2.  Verify Correct Controller Jumper Options Selections
  339.  
  340. Refer to Section 1.1
  341.  
  342. Note: Normally, drive power is supplied via a power harness from
  343. the system power supply directly to the drive's J3 DC power
  344. connector. The J5 connector on the ST21/ST22 can be used to
  345. provide disc drive power in systems lacking an extra power
  346. harness or for Drive-on-a-Card applications. Refer to figures
  347. 4-6.
  348.  
  349. A cable splitter, often called a Y-cable, may be used to tap off
  350. the diskette drive power cable. They are available from most
  351. Distributors/Dealers.
  352.  
  353. 3. Install the Controller as Illustrated in Figure 6 of the
  354. Seagate Installation Guide (publication # 36127-xxx)
  355.  
  356. 4. Verify correct cable attachment and replace the system cover.

  360. 2.0  Preparing to Format Your Drive
  361.  
  362. Please read this section before proceeding to the formatting
  363. instructions.  BE SURE TO BACK UP ANY DRIVE CONTAINING DATA.
  364. FORMATTING AT ANY LEVEL MAY RESULT IN PARTIAL OR COMPLETE LOSS OF
  365. DATA.  SEAGATE TECHNOLOGY, INC. ASSUMES NO LIABILITY FOR LOST DATA.
  366.  
  367. *   Always use the same version of DOS throughout the entire
  368. process.  On two-drive system, always use the same version of DOS
  369. on BOTH drives.
  370.  
  371. *   For optimum performance, format the drive installed in your
  372. system in the same orientation in which it will be used.
  373.  
  374. *   The ST21 and ST22 have the ability to flash controller error
  375. conditions via the drive front-panel LED.  Refer to Section 5.0
  376.  
  377. 2.1  Paired Program Drive Formatting
  378.  
  379. Paired Program drives are shipped with a small DOS partition
  380. containing Installation software and a README file which has the
  381. latest information for the drive being installed.  See Section 3.0
  382.  
  383. 2.2  Non-Paired Drive Formatting
  384.  
  385. Seagate non-paired drives do not have installation software or
  386. recognizable format.  These drives may be installed by following the
  387. procedures in Section 4.0.
  388.  
  389. 2.3  Paired Drives:  Less than 32 Formatted MBytes
  390.  
  391.  
  392. You will need ONE DOS-bootable diskette that has the boot files from
  393. the version of DOS that you plan to use on your Seagate drive.  This
  394. diskette should also contain the FORMAT program provided with DOS,
  395. and sufficient space (approximately 50K Bytes) to save the
  396. installation programs from the hard drive.  The diskette must NOT be
  397. write-protected.
  398.

  401. 2.4  Paired Drives:  Greater than 32 Formatted MBytes
  402.  
  403. You will need TWO Diskettes: One DOS-bootable with the version of
  404. DOS you plan to use; the second diskette with at least 360K
  405. Bytes available to save the installation and DISK MANAGER programs.
  406. The diskette must not be write-protected.
  407.  
  408. 2.5  CMOS Configuration
  409.  
  410. If you are installing your drive in a PC AT and a hard drive is not
  411. presently attached or operational, the hard drive count in CMOS will
  412. already set to zero.
  413.  
  414. If a standard hard drive is already attached and operating, it will
  415. be the first drive and the Seagate Paired Program drive will be
  416. Drive 2.  It is not necessary to change the CMOS hard drive count
  417. when installing with ST21/22 controllers.
  418.  
  419. 2.6  BIOS Enable/Disable
  420.  
  421. The ST21 and ST22 are shipped with the BIOS enabled, JP3 open.  To
  422. disable the BIOS, attach jumper at JP3.  Refer to Figures 4-5.

  442. 2.6.2  BIOS Disabled
  443.  
  444. Set all hard drives attached to the ST21/ST22 in the system CMOS
  445. to a type that matches the Read/Write head and cylinder
  446. specifications.
  447.  
  448. Remove jumpers JP1 and JP2, and attach jumper to JP3.
  449.  
  450. Important Note: The ST21/ST22 must be the primary controller
  451. (i.e., DRIVE C:) when running with the BIOS disabled.
  452.  
  453. 2.7  Read/Write Head Parking
  454.  
  455. A read/write head parking program, PARK.EXE or PARK.COM, is
  456. preloaded on all Paired Program drives.
  457.  
  458. The following drives require running this PARK.EXE or PARK.COM
  459. program before the drive/system is transported: ST124, ST225,
  460. ST225R, ST238R, ST250R
  461.  
  462. If your drive is not Paired, see your Distributor/Dealer for a
  463. read/write head parking program.
  464.  
  465. 2.8  AT Systems with 40-Pin Hard Drive Interface (IDE)
  466.  
  467. Some newer AT systems have a 40-pin hard drive AT interface
  468. connector on the motherboard. On most systems, the AT interface
  469. connector must be disabled before the ST21/ST22 can be installed.
  470. Refer to the hardware installation manual supplied with your
  471. system to determine the interface enable/disable requirements.
  472.  
  473. The ST21/ST22 can operate concurrently with an installed 40-pin
  474. drive, however the ST21/ST22 BIOS must be enabled and the JP1-JP2
  475. jumpered to operate at the secondary address. Refer to Section
  476. 2.6.

  480. 3.0  Paired Program Installations
  481.  
  482. Read Sections 1-2 before beginning any formatting. The entire
  483. software installation routine is menu-driven and takes from 10 to
  484. thirty minutes, depending on drive size. For specific DOS
  485. questions, refer to the DOS manual supplied with your system.
  486. After the format is completed, the read/write heads will be
  487. parked. At the next power-up, the system will boot from the hard
  488. disc.
  489.  
  490. 3.1  Paired Program Formatting
  491.  
  492. Place a DOS-bootable diskette (to boot simply means to start the
  493. system) in Drive A and switch the power on and follow the
  494. instructions displayed on the screen.  Type:
  495.  
  496. C:INSTALLR C
  497.  
  498. If your are installing a second drive, type:
  499.  
  500. D:INSTALLR D
  501.  
  502. If you are installing a drive with DISK MANAGER software, and you
  503. already have a hard disc in your system, you must copy the
  504. DMDRVR.BIN and CONFIG.SYS files from the DISK MANAGER diskette to
  505. the root directory of the existing (first, or boot) drive.
  506.  
  507. If you already have a CONFIG.SYS file on the boot drive, update
  508. the file to include the following line:  DEVICE=DMDRVR.BIN
  509.  
  510. Refer to your DOS manual for instructions on editing the
  511. CONFIG.SYS file. DISK MANAGER also provides help files which you
  512. may print using the standard DOS print commands.

  516. 4.0  Non-Paired Drive Formatting
  517.  
  518. Use this procedure for non-Paired drives or when using a Paired
  519. drive whose installation software files were lost or not copied
  520. before formatting.
  521.

  523. LEVEL MAY RESULT IN PARTIAL OR COMPLETE LOSS OF DATA. SEAGATE

  528. drives. When adding a second drive, it is sometimes necessary to
  529. reformat the first drive.

  531. 4.1  Low-Level Physical Format Using BIOS Facility

  533. When using the system DEBUG to format in an AT system, the CMOS
  534. or system setup should be set to 0 (i.e., no hard drive
  535. installed).

  537.         1. Boot the system from the DOS system diskette
  538.  
  539.         2. At the A: prompt, insert the system DEBUG diskette and
  540.            type:

  546.         3. To access the controller's format routine; at the"-"
  547.            prompt, type:

  556.            DISK MANAGER is supplied with Seagate MFM and RLL
  557.            drives having greater than 32 formatted megabytes.
  558.            It can be used as an alternative to FDISK and FORMAT
  559.            to partition and high-level format drives.

  571. 4.2 Low-Level Format With Controller BIOS Disabled

  573. If you are running the ST21/ST22 with its BIOS disabled, use the
  574. low-level format utility supplied with your system. A drive
  575. interleave of 1:1 should be selected.

  581. 5.1  Controller Error Codes
  582.  
  583. The ST21 and ST22 will flash controller error conditions via the
  584. drive activity LED. The code will repeat at about 1 second
  585. intervals.
  586.  
  587. Error information is flashed only at power-up or soft boot. The
  588. LED will repeat the error flashes until the condition is
  589. corrected or the system is powered down.
  590.  
  591. Error code numbers 2 through 6 are fatal error. If you receive
  592. any of these messages, contact your Distributor/Dealer.

  611. 5.2 Common System/Controller Problems
  612.  
  613. If you have a problem getting the initial screen, or later
  614. getting the system to boot:
  615.  
  616.    * Check the cabling between the controller and drive. Pin-1 on
  617. the controller always corresponds to Pin-1 at the drive
  618. connector. Most cables have a contrasting color on the cable to
  619. indicate Pin-1.
  620.  
  621.    * Check the power cable to the drive. Can you hear the drive
  622. spin-up?

  626.    * Verify CMOS settings
  627.  
  628.    * Verify correct controller BIOS Address. If you have more
  629. than one board that uses BIOS ROM space, each must be set to a
  630. different memory address. Addressing multiple boards at the same
  631. address can cause problems of a indeterminate nature.
  632.  
  633.    * Low-level formatting takes too long or never completes:
  634. Format again. Make sure correct drive parameters were entered and
  635. cable connections are correct.
  636.  
  637.    * FDISK or Partitioning Error Messages: "Error reading fixed
  638. disc," "No fixed disc present": Check correct drive parameters
  639. entered. Refer to pages 3-4 (Section 1.0) Turn the system off and
  640. power-up again.
  641.  
  642.    * High-Level Format Error Message: "Invalid drive
  643. specification": Check drive parameters and controller jumpers.
  644. Run FDISK and high-level format again.
  645.  
  646.    * Drive fails to recalibrate or test Ready: Verify correct
  647. installation, cables and drive select jumper.
  648.  
  649.    * After formatting with DISK MANAGER, your system does not
  650. recognize the D, E, F ... partitions: First, make sure that you
  651. boot from the hard drive. If you still cannot access these
  652. partitions, check that the DISK MANAGER device driver, DMDRVR.BIN
  653. is in the root directory of the C: (boot) drive. Verify that the
  654. CONFIG.SYS file contains the following line:  DEVICE=DMDRVR.BIN
  655.

  658. installation, refer to the help files provided with DISK MANAGER.
